What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a non-invasive, FDA-approved treatment that’s also called a “non-surgical facelift”. Using advanced ultrasound technology, it lifts and tightens loose skin. Ultherapy is the only treatment that allows doctors to see the skin’s depth, so they can deliver energy to the exact tissue layer. It goes as deep as the subcutaneous tissue (the skin’s deepest layer) – like a surgical facelift – and has been a global phenomenon since 2009.

How Does Ultherapy Work?
As we age, our skin loses elasticity due to reduced collagen and elastin production, this starts to happen around 30 years old. Ultherapy reverses this by using micro-focused ultrasound to heat (60 to 70 degrees Celsius) the skin 1.5 to 4.5 mm deep beneath the surface.
This heat causes a controlled thermal injury that triggers the body’s natural healing response to produce new collagen and elastin. Results appear within 90 days, tightening and reducing wrinkles and lines. and can continue to improve for up to six months.
Often called a “gym session for your skin”, Ultherapy targets the deeper skin layers and the SMAS (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System) fascia, causing the collagen fibres to contract over time which gives a lifting and tightening effect with no downtime.
Why is Collagen Production Important?
Collagen is a protein that forms a web in the dermis, holding skin cells in place and allowing cell growth and skin repair. It’s essential for the skin’s firmness and elasticity. But hormonal changes, environmental pollutants and UV exposure can reduce collagen levels and cause wrinkles and sagging.
The skin has 3 layers: epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Epidermis is the outer layer, the barrier. Below that the dermis has collagen and elastin, the stuff that gives skin its firmness and elasticity. The deepest layer, subcutaneous tissue has fat and connective tissue.
Ultherapy boosts this natural process by stimulating collagen regeneration through neocollagenesis. By delivering focused ultrasound energy deep into the skin, Ultherapy not only contracts existing collagen but also stimulates new collagen fibre production. This dual action tightens and lifts the skin and gives long-term results that counteract the effects of gravity and give you a firmer, more youthful look.
What Can You Expect From Ultherapy?
Ultherapy uses your body’s healing powers to rejuvenate and firm the skin. By stimulating collagen production deep within, this treatment encourages your skin to repair and renew itself from the inside out. As collagen increases, you’ll see a natural lift and firmness that gets better and better, using your body’s regenerative processes to smooth and tighten skin, reducing signs of ageing. This natural way gives you lasting results that honour your natural youthful self.
Ultherapy Benefits
- Full Facial Contouring: Ultherapy is the first U.S. FDA-approved non-invasive treatment to tighten and lift your skin naturally. It addresses the cheeks, jawline and lower face including the tough double chin and neck areas. By stimulating deep collagen production Ultherapy contours your face and gives you a more defined jawline, visible results in 2-3 months, and optimal results in 6 months.
- Non-Invasive Procedure: Ultherapy targets the deep skin layers, including the SMAS layer (the same layer adjusted during cosmetic surgery) without any incision. This targeted approach means the connective tissue and layers of facial skin are tightened, lifting and shaping the skin.
- Precision and Customisation: With its ultrasound imaging technology Ultherapy allows practitioners to see and target the tissue layers. This precision means energy is delivered exactly where it’s needed, for your skin type and goals, no invasive procedures are required.
- Décolletage Revival: Ultherapy is great at smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles on the décolletage, an area often forgotten in skin ageing treatments. Results are visible in one session, significant at 90 and 180 days, one of the most visible signs of ageing.
- Minimal Down Time: As a non-invasive treatment Ultherapy requires no downtime. Perfect for busy people who want lifting and tightening without the recovery time of surgery.
- All Skin Types: Unlike treatments that target melanin, Ultherapy is safe for all skin types. Its micro-focused ultrasound technology goes around the melanin in the skin, reduces the risk of pigmentation and is suitable for everyone.
- Long-Lasting, Natural Results: Ultherapy stimulates your body’s natural collagen and elastin production, gradual and natural skin tightening. The lifting effect of the treatment is long-lasting, up to 1 year or more, results get better over time.
- Versatile and Powerful: The gold standard non-surgical lift, Ultherapy is known for regenerating natural collagen and elastin. It tightens and firms the skin texture, lifts sagging areas and gives you a refreshed look. This versatility makes it a great addition to other treatments like fillers and Botox for even more results.
- Convenience and Comfort: Treatments are quick and can be tailored to fit your schedule, 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the area treated. No general anaesthesia is required and you can go back to your daily activities immediately. Ultherapy is the ultimate in convenient non-surgical cosmetic treatments.
- Award Winning Expertise: With a long history of achievement, Ultherapy clinics are certified experts. The treatment has been the number one non-invasive lift for over 10 years, trusted by medical professionals and patients for consistent great results.

What Can Ultherapy Address?
Ultherapy is great for areas of the body where skin sags or loses elasticity. This FDA approved treatment is perfect for those looking for non-surgical solutions to signs of ageing. Ultherapy can address:
- Loose and Sagging Skin: Enhances skin elasticity by tightening skin that has lost firmness over time, and reducing the appearance of skin folds.
- Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Stimulates collagen production, smooths out fine lines and deeper wrinkles.
- Neck Tightening: Known as the “turkey neck”, Ultherapy reduces sagging and defines the neck area.
Areas Ultherapy Targets
Ultherapy is great for lifting and tightening without surgery. It targets the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production which leads to natural lifting and firming over time. Areas of focus include:
- Lower Face/Jowls: Tightens the jawline and minimises jowls, for a more chiselled lower face.
- Neck: Lifts and tightens the neck skin, reduces wrinkles and loose skin for a smoother look.
- Above the Bust: Reduces fine lines and wrinkles for a firmer look.
Am I a Good Candidate For Ultherapy?
- Overall Health: Generally healthy with no major medical conditions that would hinder healing (e.g. diabetes).
- Skin Condition: Not too loose but showing signs of ageing with some sagging or drooping around the eyebrows, neck, under the chin or chest.
- Skin Laxity: Refers to the loss of skin firmness, leading to sagging and looseness. Ultherapy benefits mild to moderate skin laxity the most.
- Realistic Expectations: Candidates should have realistic expectations of the results of Ultherapy. While it can improve skin laxity and firmness, it’s not a substitute for a surgical facelift.
- Age: No age requirement. For people aged 30 and above, Ultherapy is a crucial way to retain collagen in your skin. Those 30 and younger can use Ultherapy as a preventative measure as the skin’s elasticity drops rapidly once a person hits 30.
- Previous Cosmetic Procedures: Those who want to extend or enhance the effects of previous cosmetic treatments like fillers and chemical peels.

Ultherapy Procedure
Before the Procedure
- Consultation and Prep: Before your Ultherapy treatment, a full medical consultation is required. During this appointment, your doctor will do a facial analysis to assess your suitability for Ultherapy and discuss other treatments like fillers or lasers if necessary. A numbing cream will be applied about 30 minutes before we start.
- Skin Assessment and Planning: Your Ultherapy provider will assess your skin and discuss your goals. This is also when we’ll ask about your medical history. If you’re a good candidate for Ultherapy, the treatment areas on your face will be cleaned and a surgical skin marker may be used to mark and number the areas so we can target the energy precisely.
During the Procedure
- Ultrasound Energy Application: The Ultherapy handpiece is used to deliver the focused ultrasound energy into the targeted areas of your skin. This energy stimulates collagen production at different depths and the natural tightening and lifting process begins. Treatment time varies, usually 30-90 minutes depending on the area being treated.
- Monitoring and Comfort Management: Real-time ultrasound imaging is used to monitor the treatment depth and ensure the ultrasound energy is being delivered accurately. Most patients feel minimal discomfort, often describing it as a warm, tingling sensation. If you feel any discomfort, we can offer lidocaine to help.
After the Procedure
- Immediate After: There is no downtime, you can go back to your daily activities right away. Mild redness, swelling or soreness may occur, which are normal and temporary side effects of the treatment.
- Post-Treatment Care and Follow-Up:
- Sun Protection: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, no matter the weather. Wear a big hat and seek shade when you can to protect your skin from UV rays which can make swelling and sensitivity worse.
- Gentle Skincare: Use gentle, non-irritating skincare products for at least a week after treatment. No retinoids, no alpha hydroxy acids, no harsh ingredients.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink 1.5-2 litres of water a day to help your skin heal and regenerate. Hydration is key to skin elasticity and recovery.
- Avoid Harsh Activities: No heavy exercise, no heavy lifting, no high intensity workouts for at least 24-48 hours after treatment. Increased blood flow from intense activities can make swelling and discomfort worse.
- Long Term and Follow-Up: More sessions may be needed based on your age and skin goals. We’ll discuss this during your consultation to plan for the best long term results.
Ultherapy Risks
- Redness and Swelling: Some people may experience swelling which usually resolves within a few days. Cold compresses and specific aftercare instructions help to alleviate these symptoms.
- Bruising: Mild bruising can occur especially in sensitive areas. Our practitioners use gentle techniques to minimise this risk and speed up recovery.
- Numbness and Tingling: Temporary numbness or tingling in the treated area is possible but usually resolves on its own.
- Tenderness: The treated area may feel tender for a few days; avoid strenuous activities and use gentle skincare products to help manage this.
Ultherapy Complications
- Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation: Changes in skin colour where the skin can become darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation) than surrounding areas.
- Burns and Scarring: Ultrasound energy can cause burns or scarring if not done properly.
- Deep Tissue Damage: Improper application of ultrasound energy can damage deeper tissue layers and affect underlying structures.
- Prolonged Pain: While most pain is temporary, some people may experience prolonged pain beyond the recovery period.
